Bought a NIU Electric Scooter (MQiL)
After trying Segway-Ninebot and NIU models both online and in stores, I went with the NIU MQiL Urban. I picked it up on the 15th; nearly two weeks later I’m still satisfied overall. Here are my notes.
Brand Considerations
I’m picky about user experience. Within my budget and spec requirements, the shortlist came down to Ninebot and NIU. Ninebot’s design didn’t appeal to me, and I saw a lot of posts about minor issues, so I chose NIU.
Configuration
To stay within budget, I picked the MQiL Urban priced at ¥4999
. Due to mandatory bundles, the final price was ¥5699
.
Bundle Included
- Rearview mirrors
- Rear seat
Add-ons
- Upgraded to a wider rear seat for
75 CNY
No other extras so far.
Beijing Dealer Shenanigans
The dealer forced bundles (only for this model). I filed a complaint but didn’t get anywhere.

Usage Notes
- The NIU app is pretty good, though the pop-up ads are annoying—standard behavior for domestic apps. I’ll see if a proxy rule can block them.
- The scooter looks great; the design is instantly recognizable.
- I love the keyless start—no more carrying keys—but it does make me worry about my phone dying.
- There’s a onboard
USB-C
port, so you can trickle charge your phone. - Supports Apple Watch NFC unlocking.

GB Speed Limit
- The
25 km/h
cap can be lifted—just ask the shop. - The beeping above 15 km/h can usually be disabled at the same time.
Third-Party Accessories
- Dashboard protector film
- Metal footpeg end caps
- Extended kickstand base / widening pad
- Xiaomi portable inflator
I bought most of these on Pinduoduo because the prices are lower.
RuiZhi VIP
I recommend keeping the subscription—the features are essential, and a 3-year plan is cheaper overall.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m pleased with the NIU so far.
