First Experience Recycling an MBP via Xianyu

I’ve got a new MBP now, so I decided to recycle my 2019 model for some cash back — better than letting it gather dust.

Device

MacBook Pro 2019 / 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD / i7. Purchased in 2021, no hidden issues.

The 2019 model still looks great, but for my usage it stutters fairly often.

Xianyu recycle vs. JD recycle

I first tried JD’s recycle program via their PC site; the quote was under ¥3,000 even “after applying coupons”. I figured Xianyu’s official recycle might offer more, so I tried that next.

Xianyu process

First, here’s how the Xianyu process goes 👇

  1. Get an in‑app quote and book pickup.
  2. Sign out of your Apple ID on the MBP.
  3. SF Express picks it up from your door.
    • No need to include accessories like the charger; no packaging needed — the courier handles it.
  4. After pickup they send an initial payment (I got a bit over ¥1,000).
  5. They do inspection → confirm final price → transfer the balance.

Notes

If you’re mailing the machine, record a video beforehand to avoid disputes if they later claim “issues found”.

Why I declined Xianyu’s offer

Following the process, I shipped it — but the price got lowballed. Xianyu support called with a quote a bit over ¥1,000, rattling off issues I didn’t really follow. Crucially, it was far below the app estimate — a harsh cut — so I refused and asked for a return. Then they called back offering a “special” extra ¥400–¥500, raising it to the ¥2,000+ range. At that point it wasn’t much different from JD, but the bargaining felt excessive, so I declined.

If a simple refusal gets an extra ¥400–¥500, that says a lot about the haggling. Major turn‑off.

Final choice — JD Aihuishou

Since leaving it unused has little value, I ended up going with JD Aihuishou, placing the order online and completing the deal in person.

Final Thoughts

  1. My Xianyu recycle experience was poor — maybe it was “just my case,” but still.
  2. For maximum payout, selling directly on Xianyu second‑hand is likely best — if you have the time and patience.
  3. If you don’t want the hassle (my case), JD Aihuishou with in‑person handoff is the most convenient, albeit at a lower price.
  4. Alternatively, gifting the old laptop to family/friends is nice — no payment avoids later disputes.
