What You Need to Know About ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode

An overview of ChatGPT's advanced voice mode: availability, platforms, usage tips, and limitations.

Today, ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode started its gradual rollout. After using it, I found it quite good, so I’m documenting the usage situation in this article.

Limit

  • It is currently only open to Plus and Team members and is still being gradually rolled out. It is expected to be fully available this week.

    Advanced Voice is rolling out to all Plus and Team users in the ChatGPT app over the course of the week. While you’ve been patiently waiting, we’ve added Custom Instructions, Memory, five new voices, and improved accents.

    Advanced Voice is not yet available in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.

  • If you are a member but are still prompted “currently unavailable,” you can try upgrading the app to the latest version and re-logging in to try to get access. The community has mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling to gain access, so try various strategies. If none work, wait patiently for the gradual rollout to reach you.

Note that the Web version does not support it.

Usage Introduction

Taking the iOS App as an example, click the voice icon to bring up the new voice mode, after which you can communicate naturally.

Tips

  • You can interrupt AI speech directly during the conversation.

  • You can set some instruction information in Personalization - Custom Instructions, such as the following.

  • The new voice mode does not have internet connectivity capabilities, for example, it doesn’t know about the latest developments in the US election.

  • Not all chats/models support advanced voice mode, for example, GPTs are not supported, or historical conversations that include images and other files.

Usage Limits

Advanced voice mode also has usage limits, currently understood to be approximately 0.5h per day. If exceeded, you will receive the following prompt.

At the end

After light use for half a day, I find it incredible and look forward to further increases in usage limits and the quick addition of internet connectivity capabilities.

I think there are two scenarios particularly suitable for using this voice mode: English oral practice or using GPT as a tour guide when traveling, asking questions at any time.
