What You Need to Know About OpenAI o1
Recently, OpenAI officially released the o1 model, claiming it to be the most potent AI model in history. At first, I didn’t understand what was so impressive about it, but after experiencing it purposefully, I discovered its power.
Here, I’ll mark down what I’ve learned about o1.
AGI Level System
First, let’s understand the level of classification OpenAI has made for AI capabilities. From this, we can sense that as the level increases, the capabilities become stronger.
Why is it called o1
Previously, we knew model names like gpt3, gpt3.5, gpt4, etc., corresponding to AI level L1.
But this time, it’s directly o1, which is L2. Here, ‘o’ stands for openai, and ‘1’ is the first generation.
From this, we can know that o1 is very powerful.
Usage Restrictions
ChatGPT o1 is only available for limited use by Plus and team users.
50 messages a week with OpenAI o1-preview and 50 messages a day with OpenAI o1-mini to start.
API o1 is only open to
tier5
users; you can check your account tier here
OpenAI o1-preview and o1-mini are rolling out today in the API for developers on tier 5.
Usage Tips
o1 is so powerful, but where exactly does its strength lie? Here’s an example using o1 preview
to illustrate.
Give me 5 USA countries with letter A in the third position in the name
If you click on the Thought above, you can see the entire reasoning chain of the AI.
If we ask GPT4 with the same prompt
From this, o1 can provide relatively more accurate and logical answers even with concise prompts.
Current Drawbacks of o1
- The price is too high. Looking at the API price of o1, it’s N times higher compared to the GPT API price.
- The usage is currently limited when using it under ChatGPT. Therefore, for ordinary AI Q&A, using the GPT model or o1 mini is recommended.
- It currently doesn’t support internet connectivity, file capabilities, etc.
Conclusion
In short, o1 represents AI entering the L2
stage. We look forward to the price coming down and the full capability of o1 being released as soon as possible.
