Advanced Voice Mode Video Capabilities in ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode now supports live video and screen sharing, giving the assistant “eyes” while you talk. After a few days of use, here are the highlights and drawbacks I’ve noticed.
Requirements
- Access is limited to
Plus, Pro, and Team
accounts and is still rolling out gradually. As of December 12, 2024, we are slowly releasing video, screen share, and image uploads in advanced voice in our latest mobile apps (app versions 1.2024.337 for Android and 1.2024.339 for iOS). We expect to complete this rollout to all Team and most Plus and Pro users over the next week, except those in the European Union, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.
- The feature is currently unavailable in EU countries.
Supported Platforms
iOS and Android
only. The web, Mac, and Windows apps don’t support advanced voice mode yet.
Model Support
- Custom GPTs don’t support advanced voice mode at the moment.
- In testing, GPT-4o, GPT-4, and o1 all work with the feature.
How to Use It
- Start a new conversation.
- Tap the audio icon.
- Choose Video to turn on the camera. You can also upload photos, snap new ones, or share your screen.
Real-time video chats feel smooth and intuitive.
Use Cases
Travel is a great example: keep the camera on while exploring and ask GPT about points of interest. It’s the closest thing to a virtual tour guide.
Drawbacks
You can’t enable advanced voice mode mid-thread. Every video session requires starting a new chat.
Usage Limits
OpenAI hasn’t published daily limits. When you have about 15 minutes
remaining for the day, GPT surfaces a reminder.
Bonus Feature
OpenAI temporarily added a Santa Claus voice (Santa
) that you can select across platforms. It’s available until early January.
You can now chat with Santa on ChatGPT! Until early January, you can find Santa in the available voices in settings.
Final Thoughts
Advanced voice mode with video already feels powerful, even with the current limitations. Once the rollout finishes—and especially once desktop support arrives—it could become a staple way to interact with GPT.
