My Medium Earnings in 2024

· 2 min read

In 2024, I resolved the issue with using Stripe for payments on Medium, so I subscribed to Medium membership at the beginning of the year and joined the MPP program to start writing. Here’s an analysis of my Medium earnings over the past year and my future direction.

Let me first show you the modest earnings.

Article Reading Statistics

Here’s an example from December 2024 showing article reading performance.

Number of Published Articles

As of now, I’ve published 200+ articles on Medium, including 80+ English articles.

Data Analysis

  1. On average, I only earn about $1 per month, while Medium membership costs $5 per month.
  2. Comparing to article views, with just over a thousand monthly views and reads, the numbers are quite low.
  3. The proportion of articles that generate earnings is very low.
  4. English articles generate more earnings than Chinese articles, as there’s a larger English-speaking audience.

Next Steps

  1. Improve article quality and focus on key directions based on articles that have generated some earnings. Currently, aimless writing yields very low returns.
  2. Increase social media sharing to boost article readership. In 2024, I shared one article on Reddit and instantly got hundreds of views, which was the fastest growth I’ve seen so far.

Complaints About Medium

  1. Medium requires joining the MPP program to earn money, and joining MPP requires Medium membership first. Therefore, if monthly earnings don’t exceed $5, the membership fee is essentially wasted. Of course, if you’re also reading paid articles, it might still be worthwhile.
  2. Medium’s traffic seems lower than before, and you can find pessimistic voices about Medium online.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, current Medium earnings don’t cover the membership fee, so I need to keep working hard. If you have any good suggestions, feel free to share them.
