One Month In: Monetizing a WeChat Official Account

While chatting in a creator group, I realized I could try a WeChat Official Account. I’ve been blogging for 10 years—why not publish on another platform? It could earn some money and reach more readers. Exciting thought.

So I went for it. After a little over a month, I got the account up and running and even made a bit. Here’s a summary of what I did.

Notes

I had a WeChat Official Account before, but with a narrow focus (Alfred), and Alfred has faded over the years. That account wasn’t updated much and had few followers—about 137 (as of 3/26). After deciding to reboot, I renamed the account and adjusted the positioning.

Metrics

After a month of publishing, follower and engagement numbers look decent:

Some short “interest” posts performed surprisingly well in reads—pleasant surprise.

Many posts exceeded 10k reads; several hit 30–40k.

Earnings

If I’m doing this, I’m thinking about revenue—money motivates, and I also enjoy writing. Win-win.

I enabled ads on May 15, so revenue started on 5/16.

Current Thoughts

  1. Growth looks good. If all goes well, I should hit 1,000 followers in June—a new level.
  2. Content quality needs to go up. With ~20k reads, eCPM is only 2–3 CNY. If I can push it to 30+, revenue won’t be just a few dozen yuan—it could be much higher.
  3. Mix in some “流水账” posts. From the data, high-quality/most-liked/high-revenue posts often aren’t the same thing; balance matters.
  4. The “Wen Yi Wen” Q&A feature (launched in 2023) seems worth trying. It integrates with Official Accounts and can drive traffic. I used to like Zhihu; since it’s fading, I can switch to “Wen Yi Wen” with little extra cost.

Plan

Keep publishing through June. Target: 50 CNY/day, 1k/month. That’s motivating. I’ll keep blogging regardless; monetization just nudges strategy and focus.

Course in the Works 📣

I’m documenting lessons learned and turning them into a course. Tech folks have advantages in the creator space—tools, and a focus on what matters: data, audience, content quality. I’ll package these into a course. It helps others and generates income—win-win.

Final Thoughts

  1. Keep pushing the Official Account.
  2. Keep enriching the course—help others and earn at the same time.
