The Journey of Polishing Alfred - Remote App

In addition to the Mac version, Alfred also has a mobile app version for iPhone/iPad. After some time of use, here I will summarize my personal practices.

Should You Get It?

Let’s start with the conclusion:

  1. The remote itself is just an extension of the desktop version of Alfred, and essentially, it still operates the Mac version of Alfred. So, while it has its playful aspects, it’s somewhat underwhelming.
  2. If you don’t have scenarios where you need to remotely control your Mac, I don’t recommend purchasing it, as it’s not commonly used.

Download/Cost

  • Paid/$4.99, Download Address
  • No Android version provided, and the author has no plans to support it.
  • Using the remote does not require that the Mac version must have purchased the Powerpack license, but to implement complex functionalities through workflow triggers, it’s better to purchase it. Therefore, for non-Powerpack users, the playability of the remote is not high.

Positioning

The ultimate iOS command center for Alfred. Your iPhone or iPad now becomes a perfect day-long companion to your Mac.

As the official introduction states, Alfred remote is positioned as the control center for the Mac version of Alfred. It allows the operation of commands/workflows in the desktop version of Alfred through the remote, thus achieving remote operation of the Mac.

Limitations

  1. Currently, Alfred Remote does not support syncing the Mac system clipboard, achieving clipboard history support on iOS.

Usage

Configuration

  1. Enable Remote Server on the Mac version

  2. Add devices under iPhone/iPad Remote App

If the Mac is not found under the Wi-Fi network, you can directly add it by entering the IP/port. Enter the phrase as prompted to successfully add it. Once added, you can see the corresponding Mac device on the homepage panel.

  1. Customize the remote operation panel

Customize the panel in Mac Alfred Remote as needed, such as adding system commands/workflows, etc. After adding, the iPhone will automatically sync and update.

  2. Remote system settings

To better use the remote app, it’s recommended to enable the following settings in the settings center.

Usage Scenarios

Here are some of my current modest usage scenarios:

  1. When watching movies on the Mac, you can use the remote to control the volume or web page scrolling.
  2. Open commonly used apps/websites.

In Conclusion

  1. Initially, I bought it out of love for Alfred. After letting it gather dust for many years, I’ve now decided to start using it and found that there are indeed scenarios where it’s needed, especially since it can remotely operate the Mac.
  2. I hope the author can continue to maintain it, looking forward to some new gameplay/features.
